Abstract
Objectives £º The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in patients with methamphetamine (METH) dependence in comparison with the control group. We also aimed to evaluate correlations between METH dependence period, total amount of administered METH, duration of METH administration, duration of the
most recent abstinence period, total amount of administered METH during the past year, duration of METH administration
during the past year, and HRV indices in patients with methamphetamine dependence.

Methods £º We examined HRV of 20 METH dependent patients, who were already detoxified and 20 comparisons. We also performed a comparative analysis of the results amongst the test and control subjects by using ANCOVA. We also investigated the correlation between variables related to addiction and HRV indices in patients with METH dependence by using partial correlation analysis.

Results £º A majority of HRV indices were lower in the METH dependence group than in the control group. METH dependence period exhibited significant correlation with some HRV indices. Abstinence period and the administered amount of METH during the past year possessed significant correlations with some HRV indices, as well. The total amount of administered METH and duration of METH administration had a correlation with Mean Heart Rate (MHR), but the duration of METH administration during the past year showed no significant correlation with the HRV index.

Conclusion £º Our results suggest that METH adversely affected the cardiac autonomic nervous system. The impairment of autonomic nervous system was directly proportional to the amount of administered METH during past year. And the extent of normalization of autonomic nervous system was dependant on the most recent abstinence period. In other words, longer period of the most recent abstinence period led to higher rate of normalization of autonomic nervous system.
